Monday came here way too fast! Our weekend was filled with lots of laughter, sister snuggles and delicious Amy’s Donuts – can’t wait to share Beau’s first birthday pics and details later this week once I get everything all organized into one place. For now, I’m so excited to share Laura’s Sister Spotlight post. If you have been following along, we’ve had Wendy and Jessica share their favorite fashion picks, travel tips and about their lives in some of the coolest cities.
Today, Laura is sharing about her life in New York City, an incredible dress she found that would be perfect for spring weddings, and about her travels with her boyfriend Corbin. I know you’ll just love getting to know Laura, the sister who was voted “most popular” in high school (she’s going to kill me for saying that … )
Name: Laura – better known as Aunt Lala to Shep and Beau
Sister birth order: I am the other middle sister – #3!
Where you live: I currently reside in New York City and have been living in Manhattan for the past (almost) 6 years!
What you do: Customer Success Manager at social media company
How you met your significant other: Corbin and I met through friends over 5 years ago (whoa!). The exact setting? A bar in Midtown Manhattan full of people in their early 20s and top 40 music in February of 2012 at approximately 12:30am. He had only lived in New York for two weeks at the point, so I always joke that I swept him up before he could meet anyone else. 🙂 He bought tickets to a Rangers game that night for a few days later, and we have been having a blast every day since!
Where you last traveled: Our latest trip, down the California coast, was one of my personal favorites, because we were able to combine family time, party time, and relaxation all into one trip. We started our trip in Berkeley, where we visited with Corbin’s sister and nieces, headed down to Big Sur, Santa Barbara, and Santa Monica, (of course in a convertible) and then ended our trip with my side of the family (Julie, Clint, Brian, and Jessica) in San Diego where Jessica lives. After a few international trips in the past couple of years (Greece, London, Berlin, etc) we decided we wanted to see more of the country we live in. And goodness gracious it was wonderful! Below is the route we took, with a few links to our favorite stops (hotels and restaurants).
- Acme Bakery – the freshest bread and best coffee I have ever tasted!
- Deet Jens – we stayed at this super special, super peaceful place right on Highway 1. No wifi, no cell service. We were truly off the grid!
- Nepenthe – a suggestion from our mom actually! A restaurant right on the edge of the cliff in Big Sur with the best view of the Pacific Ocean. I told friends my favorite moment of our entire trip was having a glass of wine at this place.
- Arigoto – the freshest sushi! We sat right at the bar and devoured every bite.
- Oceana – this hotel was a splurge for our last night on the road before seeing family. If only the weather would have cooperated, I would have loved to sit my this pool all day.
Workout routine: I do a combination of classes via ClassPass (some of my personal favorites in New York are Mile High Run Club, Barry’s Boot Camp, and Shadowbox) a few times a week, and try to get to the gym at work 2-3 times per week as well. I’m looking forward to going on runs when it warms up outside! I won’t lie – happy hours and sleeping in tend to take priority over workouts, so I may not be as dedicated as Wendy or Jessica.
Favorite lipstick: Is it bad to say I’ll take whichever one I can find?
Favorite outfit currently: With a ton of weddings quickly approaching this year (7 in 2017 is the current count!) I needed a comfortable and stylish black dress for all occasions (weddings, meetings, nights out, etc). Rent the Runway is great, but it adds up cost-wise … and I also always worry that someone else at the wedding will have the same dress. I loved this one from Club Monaco.
Favorite recipe: I won’t lie – we don’t cook a ton. We have breakfast and lunch provided at work (#workperks) so Seamless and going out to dinner are great options after a long day at the office. However, Trader Joe’s moved in just a few blocks down the street, and I’ve really been enjoying the challenge of cooking healthier recipes with the ingredients they have to offer. One of my favorite recipes recently – Cauliflower Rice Bibimbap with Korean Bugolgi beef. For a recipe somewhat similar to what we cooked, check here.
How many kids you’d like one day: Julie ALWAYS ASKS ME THIS QUESTION. In an effort to not scare my boyfriend away, no comment. It isn’t 1, and it isn’t 10. I’m just working on getting a puppy right now. 🙂
Favorite memory growing up: We grew up on a lake in Michigan, and I absolutely love that most of my memories were from being outdoors. Whether it was sledding in the snow, or on our boat, we were a pretty outdoorsy bunch!
