In the second post in the Sister Spotlight Series, my youngest sister Jessica is sharing about her life in San Diego, how she met her Navy helicopter husband Brian and how they manage time apart when he’s deployed. She has a heart of gold, and is always such a blast to be around. Truly the baby sister, she’s very easy-going and goes with the flow (I mean she had to, she was the fourth sister in just under five years!) Here she is, I know you’ll love her as much as I do.
Name: Jessica Sprague
Sister birth order: #4- my parents saved the best for last
Where you live: San Diego, California
What you do: Talent Acquisition Specialist
How you met your significant other: Brian and I met in a very typical college way. We were both sophomores in college, he at Georgia Tech and I was at University of Georgia. A girl on my hall was dating his fraternity brother so Brian came along with a bunch of their friends for a night in Athens. We were hanging out at the pregame and then went out in Athens. From there, we spent the next two years making that hour drive 2-3 times a week to see each other. While he went to flight school in Pensacola, I worked in Atlanta until we were in engaged November 2013. He received orders to San Diego in January 2014 and we moved together at that time. We never lived in the same zip code until we were engaged! We got married in San Diego in January 2015 and were so lucky to have a lot of our friends and family join us out here. He is on his sea tour (deployable tour) as a helicopter pilot in the Navy and right now we were in-between deployments so anytime we get to spend with each other we consider special.
Where you last traveled: We went skiing in Salt Lake City over MLK weekend with a group of our college friends and we were in Las Vegas for New Years. We try to do as much as we can whenever we can. I was lucky to visit him at the end of his deployment in August and we spent 5 days in Tokyo and 5 days in Bali. I am hoping to visit him at port calls 1-2 times again when he deploys this summer/fall.
Workout routine: I recently joined Orange Theory (Wendy wouldn’t stop talking about it) and am officially addicted. I try to work out 5-6 times a week, usually after work. I also try to incorporate yoga one time a week to mix things up. Brian and I are pretty active on the weekends though and try to take advantage of the San Diego weather as much as we can by running, hiking, or bike rides outside.
Favorite lipstick: My absolute favorite color to wear on the weekends is Candy Yum-Yum by MAC.
I can wear these to work or out with friends. San Diego fashion tends to be is very casual but trendy at the same time.
Favorite recipe: I love making stuffed peppers with red peppers, ground turkey (season with taco seasoning), cheese, black beans, corn, and diced tomatoes. We’ll make a huge batch of these on Sunday and eat them throughout the week.
How many kids you’d like one day: Brian comes from a family of 3 and I have 4 in my family, so I know we definitely want at least 2-3. We’ll see how the first one goes and then re-evaluate.
Favorite memory growing up: Something I loved about growing up in Ohio is that my parents let us get bored and then we would get creative. We were always inventing games or exploring outside. Sometimes I felt like I didn’t even need friends because my sisters were my best friends. I think I took on the role as the younger sister and embraced it by being fearless and fun. Even now, I still make a huge effort to see my family as much as possible even if its weekend trips here and there.
