If you’ve followed along on the blog, you have seen we moved into our home here in Ohio about 6 months ago. Since then, we’ve been making steady progress on our home updates just the way we like it! I posted about our formal dining room update here and today I’m going to share the updates we’ve made to our kitchen and living room. Scroll to the bottom for source links.
The first in our list of home updates was new flooring and paint on the whole first floor to help unify and brighten the space. We chose Horizon by Benjamin Moore for the walls in the main living areas, Simply White by Benjamin Moore for the fireplace and trim and Black by Benjamin Moore for the island in the kitchen. We started with Onyx and once it was on I realized it didn’t look dark enough so we switched to plain black.
We chose to do pre-finished handscraped hardwood flooring (this is very similar) in the first floor and chose the color “Vintage Timber.” It’s very dark but also has lots of variations in the color so it never looks too dark. I love the contrast with the paint. That said, everyone warned me that it would be high maintenance to keep them clean and they are. I end up using our Roomba, vacuum and sweeping it everyday. It’s exhausting but on those very few days that the floors look clean I’m in love.
Once we had the floors installed, I realized we had to get all new rugs to keep the house feeling cozy. Now, I kind of regret the ones I bought but I love the way they look (eek, see a pattern!). The problem with jute is that it’s not easy to clean. Any tips to keep jute clean?
Living Room: Ivory Jute Rug
Kitchen: I have this jute rug in the kitchen, and this wool tribal print rug in the kitchen.
I love picking out lighting because I think they can make a big difference in how the whole home looks!
Living Room: Winslow Arc Sectional Floor Lamp, Capital Pearson Chandelier
Kitchen: I decided to add some gold tones in the lighting with this cage chandelier over the island, and a simple glass pendant from Kichler for our breakfast nook.
Living Room: We ended up just buying the sofa to match our large sofa from Ballard Designs since this living room was so much larger than ours in Florida, and I love how comfy and bright these couches look. I know once the boys wear these slipcovers out I can switch them out with a different color down the road without having to completely replace the couches (at least that’s my plan!
Kitchen: I painted the kitchen nook table with French Gray by Annie Sloan and kind of messed it up (FYI don’t paint in your garage when the temperatures are fluctuating so much!) For now it at least made it in the color scheme I wanted, but I’ll need to repaint it here soon.
Kids’ play area: We have a small amount of toys set up here in the living room since we are in this space so much. I bought another IKEA storage unit and these Land of Nod bins. I liked the neutral colors of these since they would be in our main living area but still looked playful. We also got this KidKraft Modern Table for their meals & craft time.
What’s your next spring home update project?
