Getting kids to eat healthy can sometimes feel impossible. And whenever you’re with a group of moms, conversation will eventually get there. Tips of new foods they introduced and how some kids refuse vegetables but others can’t get enough fruits. We talk about phases our kids go through where they only eat carbs or suddenly stop eating one of their longtime staples. It can be exhausting when your child only begs for Goldfish, and we all want to help our kids develop healthy eating habits that stick.
I’ve found that both of my boys have needed help in different areas when it comes to eating a balanced meal. Shep has always loved fruit and would choose grapes and strawberries over fruit snacks most days. But he doesn’t love protein and needs prodding when it comes to eating grilled chicken. Beau has been a little more adventurous with food, enjoying salmon last week and always reaching for avocado. But he doesn’t like fruit as much and also prefers empty carbs over vegetables (don’t we all!).
If you follow along on Instagram, you’ve probably seen me post about EatPakd. This food delivery service for kids is one of my favorite mom hacks I stumbled across last month. We’ve been big fans of the delicious, GMO-free, organic and nut-free foods that come each week, making my life just a little less crazy between balancing a freelance career, entertaining a preschooler and toddler and trying my best to maintain my sanity. In case you were considering EatPakd and wanted to learn more, this is the post for you. And make sure to scroll to the bottom to grab a coupon code to try out EatPakd yourself!
How it works:
Each week I head into their simple web program to see the meals they will feature for the next week. I choose my packs based on my plan (5 for us!) and then check out. All the different meals are marked to be dairy-free, vegetarian, etc. in case your child or family has specific requests. All the meals are nut-free too (big win if your child has a nut-free childcare center!)
The meals come looking like below. It fits easily into a backpack, or you can break the individual packs apart and use them on their own. I love this feature because sometimes we’ll pack a snack for the park and it’s a breeze.
Sample menu items:
I am always impressed by how creative the menus are each week. Here are just some of the different menu items they’ve had:
- Lip Smackin Mac & Cheese Pak: Gluten-free chickpea macaroni elbow noodles with cheese sauce, served with carrots and yogurt ranch, green apple slices, and a sweet potato brownie
- Hands Off My Nuggets Pak: Our famous chicken nuggets served with cucumbers and hummus, pineapple bites, and yogurt pretzels
- SunButty Loves Me Pak: SunButter & jelly on whole wheat waffles, served with grape tomatoes, cucumber slices, clementines, and yogurt pretzels
- Turkey Meatball Pak: Turkey meatballs with caulitots, clementines, blueberries, and a chocolate sweet potato brownie
Best places to take them:
Seriously these meals are so versatile, I bring them to the park, pack them in Shep’s school lunch, take along in my diaper bag for an emergency snack, and bring them out for dinner when I’m making a meal for the family that isn’t super kid-friendly. And – these meals are so delicious Clint and I have found ourselves grabbing a snack from time-to-time (the sunbutter cookie is amazing!)
