When we moved to our current neighborhood, one of the biggest draws for us was the community feel and how there were so many young families nearby. I know we’re lucky to have this community of families — playdates are just a text away, there are countless parties and events celebrating different seasons and everyone is always willing to help one another out however they can.
We like to have BBQs in our backyard as often as we can, with the weather being so nice and warm. And let’s face it — taking kids out to dinner is no picnic. But I have to admit, I don’t like complicated dinners and I like to keep the menu as simple as possible because while we are entertaining and serving our neighbors, we also need to keep an eye on our two boys! Thankfully it’s possible to have a simple and delicious grilling menu without a lot of fuss.
This weekend we decided to invite a few families to grill out, but I decided to put a little spin on the normal hamburger recipe we stick with and also make my mom’s famous potato salad. Also, because so many of our friends have specific dietary needs, are pregnant or nursing, I always try to have options for everyone when it comes to food and drinks. So when I made our menu for the night, I had these options for everyone taken into consideration:
Izze Fusion Mango Refreshers (with or without alcohol added) + fresh limes
Lemon Lemon Sparkling Lemonade Cocktails (with or without alcohol added)
California Bacon + Cheddar Gourmet Burgers with Sriracha Mayo (with or without the bun)
Classic Potato Salad (my mom’s recipe)
Breyer’s Ice Cream Cones (small portions for kiddos!)
We have a few grocery stores to choose from, but I always like to head to Giant Eagle because I know I can find everything in one place. They have the largest selection out of any grocery in our area and have lots of interesting specialty items I love to try (not to mention, everyone loves their huge local beer selection!) Beau was my shopping buddy for the day, so we headed out to get all our items!
Summer Grilling with Giant Eagle
The Best California Burgers and Classic Potato Salad Recipe
- 8 Hamburger Buns
- 8 Certified Angus Beef Gourmet Bacon & Cheddar Patties
- 3 Sliced avocados
- 2 Sliced tomatoes
- 1 Sliced onions
Sriacha Honey Sauce
- 1 cup Hellmann's mayonnaise
- 3 tbsp Sriarcha
- 2 Tbsp Honey
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
Classic Potato Salad
- 2 pounds Yukon Gold Potatoes
- 3 Boiled eggs, sliced
- 1 1/2 cups Hellmann's Mayonnaise
- 2 Tbsp Yellow Mustard
- 2 Tbsp Salt
- 1 Tbsp Pepper
- 1 Tbsp Paprika
- 2 stalks Chopped celery
- 3/4 cup Chopped onion
Before the guests come, I made the potato salad to let it get nice and cool in the fridge. First, boil potatoes (about 20 minutes). Let drain. Mix together Hellmann's mayonnaise, mustard, salt, pepper. Once cooled, cut potatoes into small pieces and mix together with the sauce. Slice eggs and place on top. Garnish with paprika. Refrigerate for at least one hour.
For burgers, place on grill until cooked to desired temperature. While cooking, mix together sauce ingredients. Set aside. Slice garnish including avocados, tomatoes and onions.
Set food out, and enjoy!
When it comes to keeping kids entertained, we love filling up a little pool, turning on the sprinkler and setting up the water table. It’s amazing how little kids can stay entertained for hours just splashing in the lawn. Clint usually mans the grill and I get all the sides ready while our friends relax on our back patio.
The babies of our neighborhood are all growing so fast. Beau is at the age now where he just loves following all the other big kids and it’s adorable to watch. Andrea’s son Andrew is a few months younger than Beau and he’s on the verge of walking. And of course Whitney just welcomed her son Davis, so he slept through most of the BBQ (I remember those days!) I did love being able to offer the Izze Refreshers and the Lemon Lemon Sparkling Lemonade to my friends who are nursing or who prefer a nonalcoholic drink – they all loved the light flavors!
For dessert that night we had Breyer’s ice cream cones and Pepperidge Farms Farmhouse Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies. Everyone loved the simplicity of a neighborhood BBQ that brought everyone together on one of the best nights weather-wise so far this summer. We even saw the fireflies come out later on!
