We’re on our way up to Columbus, and I’ve been excited/dreading/terrified of the 15 hour car trip since we heard the news we were moving. With a 2 year old and 6 month old, the worst visions of ultimate hysteria were swirling. But over the past few months we’d done a fair amount of traveling with them so knew some tricks to possibly make this adventure bearable and dare me say – enjoyable.
The first thing I know is that kids love new toys. And while I don’t want Shepard to expect Christmas-like amounts of toys every time we go on a car trip, I’m willing to do just about anything to help this go smoothly. Plus, I really don’t want him watching 8 hours of TV everyday. I’m all for some quiet moments thanks to our friend the iPad, but I also don’t want his brain cells to completely shrivel up from this car trip either.
Here are some tips some friends of mine passed along regarding road trips:
- Break it up. Don’t try to do it all in the same amount of time you would with just you and your husband.
- Give your kids new items each day. I plan to wrap up the gifts (I know, I know) to open each morning.
- Load up on snacks. I found snacks we don’t usually keep in our cupboard to give him each day so they are something different and exciting.
After extensive research, here are the toys and games I found for my 2 year old that I can’t wait to test out, or try out in a car trip setting:
- Melissa & Doug’s Noah’s Ark / 2. Kumon At the Zoo Sticker Book. 3. V-tech Tote and Go Laptop 4. Zipadee-Zip Flying Squirrel Pajamas / 5. LEGO Duplo Rocket Ship
Wish us luck!
